Position Title Marshallese Studies Instructor
Job Description

This position teaches Marshallese Studies courses. This includes but is not limited to Marshallese Capstone, Marshallese Composition, Marshallese Creative Writing, Marshallese Culture, Marshallese Government and Marshallese Grammar. This position will be responsible to support the Marshallese Studies Chair on class scheduling, course review, program review and development of Marshallese Studies offerings

Required Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s and/or Master’s Degree in Cultural Studies or Micronesian or Pacific Studies OR an equivalent combination of degree(s), teaching experience and traditional knowledge

2. Fluent in both oral and written Marshallese and English

3. Working knowledge of Marshallese official orthography

4. Must have a jowi

5. Must be a native-born Marshallese

6. Lived in the Marshall Islands for 10+ years

Preferred Qualifications

1. Teaching experience that incorporates best practices in the classroom
2. ESL/EFL Certification
3. Marshallese Studies Certification

Essential Duties

Essential Function 1. Teaching 15 credits per semester.

  • Writing syllabi and lesson plans.
  • Conducting courses according to the scheduled time.
  • Teaching to the required outcomes.
  • Evaluating student work.
  • Assessing student outcomes.

Essential Function 2. Student advising

  • Being available to students during the registration and early registration periods.
  • Aiding assigned students in selecting the correct courses to meet their goals at CMI, for transfer, and for their careers.
  • Assisting graduating students in understanding their options for career and transfer.

Essential Function 3. Participating in on-going assessment and alignment of Marshallese Studies courses, programs, and services.

  • Assessing outcomes for one SLO per course per semester.
  • Participating in the writing of the Marshallese Studies Program Review and Program Review Report.
  • Reviewing outlines in areas of expertise and revising as necessary.

Essential Function 4. Providing services in support of the ongoing advancement of the Marshallese Studies Program and the institution as a whole.

  • Participating in service committees.
  • Attending required departmental and dean with faculty meetings.
